Ok, before reading the JK interview, I always just assumed that Voldemort was just saying that he would let Lily live...and then kill her anyway, after he got to Harry.
But now, I'm not sure...I don't know what to think...JKR is certainly dancing around the question, it's hard to make sense of it all.

i dont think anyone asked voldemort to give her a chance. voldemort wouldnt take orders from anyone else. unless someone did him an immense favor like wormtail getting his hand back for making the potion to give voldemort a new body.

Well I think Snape might of told Voldemort not to. He probably had a crush on lily since forever, The Pensieve scene in book 5. He felt guilty because he told voldemort about the prophecy. So- hmmm just had a thought. Snape turned to be a double-agent before voldemort downfall. So that obviously happened after he told Voldemort about the prophecy because why would he tell him if his alliance was with the order? So to make up for telling Voldy about the prophecy he asked if lily could be spared.

I like your theory Blaw...but I have to disagree.
Like Fu-Lin-Yoo said, I don't think Voldemort would take orders from anyone. Voldemort does what's best for him, not his followers.

Yea but if you say voldy only does whats best for him, then why would he let lily live?
And Fu-lin I think Snape did him a incredible favor by telling him the prophecy. Well a part of it. The part where it said that the person who could kill him would be borned to... you know. I think Voldemort would be grateful to him by telling him who the person that could kill him is.
haha fu-lin just read your post now. HUGE favor.

Lily would have been a liabilty to Voldemort though...
She would have been one more person fighting in the Order and trying to avenge her husband's and son's death. I just think that Voldemort wouldn't have let her live either way.

Yea but if you say voldy only does whats best for him, then why would he let lily live? That's just it...I don't think he would let her live either way because what good would that do him? Voldemort is self-serving, I don't think he would really care what Snape wanted.

Haha, Blaw that's what I was thinking too. I mean...why else would the Dark Lord save someone, especially a muggleborn (or "mudblood"). We know how much he loathes muggleborns, the only other reason I can think up of is that Voldemort wanted Lily for her potions skills...but we know Snape is just as good as Lily..perhaps that might even help along the idea that Lily and Snape became friends- because of potions. Even when Harry used Snape's potions book, Slughorn kept alluding to Lily, never to Snape. Also, if Lily and Snape were friends, James eventually became her girlfriend and later...her husband. It would've provided Snape with an even bigger incentive for hating James. Snape could've only asked for Voldemort to spare Lily because of that friendship they might've established.
Plus, this could be the reason that Snape loathes Harry so much, aside from looking like James...he has Lily's eyes.
Overall: I say Snape told Voldemort to spare Lily's life. Voldemort maybe thought Snape just wanted her saved as someone he could practice torture on himself...I don't know, but Snape must've come up with something to the liking of the Dark Lord to actually have him ask Lily whether she wanted to die or not.

Well I think Voldy awards his servants if they do good. Wormtail with the hand.
And now remember Voldy was obsessed with immortality so if he heard that it was prophesized that someone could kill him, I think that he would be very greatful for snape telling him. This is all speculation of course.

I guess we'll agree to disagree But like I said, it's a really good theory Blaw, well thought out. I just don't happen to subscribe to that theory myself. But if it turns out you were right all along, you have an exalt coming your way after book 7 comes out
