Earlier this week I spoke to Matthew Fox,in my town to promote 'We Are Marshall'. He told me he was contracted to the show for another 4 years after this season, along with some of the other cast members. He added that at least one or more characters would die in each season in order to serve the story arc that was imagined from the beginning,as it was necessary. I try to get things like this on the forum quickly, as I don't comment often. I apologise if this is in the wrong section, but didn't feel it was a 'spoiler' as it was rather cryptic. www.4815162342.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32009

I wonder what this will affect all the fan theories. Why are the deaths necessary? What point do they serve?

Just because the network has someone contracted for four more years, it doesn't necessarily mean he will be there for 4 more years. It's just a safeguard when they write the contract so that he can't leave without the consent of the producers etc

The standard Hollywood contract for television actors in lead roles in a new show is for 7 years - but it's very one sided. The actor is nailed down for that period of time - but if whoever is running the show decides to kill them off - or just stop doing the show - they can. So I can guarantee - aside from "The Others" - the main cast is all "signed on for the next 4 years" I am sure that both Maggie Grace and Iam Sommerhalder had both signed "Seven Year Contracts" too.
So basically someone saying they are signed for a certain amount of time really doesn't mean all that much - unless it's someone in a supporting role like maybe Michael Emerson saying he was signed for this year only - which he hasn't said - that I know of - I am just using him as an example.
Emerson saying something like that might be significant - but you never really know.

Just because you are contracted for 4 years doesn't mean your character will be alive for 4 years. They may only appear in flashbacks or dreams.

Well, I thik the contracts they sign is somthing called a Uterlateral contract (they were talking about this on Gneraly speaking once) where the actro signs a contract with the production to be on for so many eyars. They ahve to be there when the producers want him there. He can't pull out, but the production can at any time.
If you sign a contract for four years, it doesn't mean you'll be on for four years, if I am thinking of the right thing, it simply means you'll be willing to do the show for four years.
