Exactly, that was like the early 1950's.
I still think the show is leading up to the Mayan apocalypse in 2012 because we saw the mayan calendar behind those hippy scientists in the orientation.
Whether or not they will maintain the slow progression of like 2 days an episode, i dont know; but im sticking with 2008.

From studing the Oceanic Airlines website, you can find Jack Shepard's baggage ticket with the date Sept 21, 2009 on it, so i guess that's the date. We've been talking about the whole timeline over here: lostpodcast.proboards2.com/index.cgi?board=c&action=display&n=1&thread=1889
