Hey guys. Sorry if this is a long-known answer, but do we know what drug Desmond was shooting into his arm and why?
I just thought of it again with the whole heroin storyline.

We don't know and screen captures don't seem to help. There's been a lot of speculation about what it could be, but no answers.

I personaly think it was just a placebo to keep him in line.

It is a very good question and something I totally forgot about. Does he shoot up before he rides the exercise bike? Maybe its DHARMA steroids?

Actually, I've never heard the placebo theory. That's a very good idea, I'm going to have to go with Dirge.

Dirge's theory is a good one, except for that no1 from DHARMA wanted to keep him in line. Remember, he too stumbled across the hatch, w/ his friend. He wasn't a DHARMA employee. But im curious to know how he survived for so long w/o any reifl on the food. That pantry wasn't near big enough.

I know he wasn't a Dharma employee, but Kelvin was. If they whole button thing was indeed an experiment, it's very possible that they told Kelvin he had to take the shot everyday to add more realism. And if that is true, Kelvin would have told Desmond the same thing.

Yes but if we think that every one on the plane was brought there for a reason then couldnt that also be true for Desmond??? So they could be trying to keep him in line. Just a thought

Think about it. There are two things that keep him in the hatch. The button and the possibilty of getting "the sickness". Now i personaly think someone is trying to keep him in there and controlling him by fear. But thanks to out lostaways he was released from that underground cage. But remember, he still is convinced there is a sickness, he took some of that "medicine" as he left.

I like that...being controlled by fear. That's cool.

I watched the pilot episode again today and controlling fear is mentioned when Jack and Kate first meet. Jack says he does a 5-count and just lets the fear in. Later Kate does a 5-count after running from a creature(is it the creature?) because she is scared and alone. It's been established that the creature seems to only hurt those that are afraid. Dealing with fear seems to be a major theme from the very beginning.

From Locke dealing with his loss of leg movement to Claire dealing with rasing the bady on her own. But it seems the island is changing the lostaways for the better.
