It was mentioned on the Transmission last year that the writers look for a couple of 'iconic moments' (the light in the hatch, for example) every season...Anyone else think the lighting of the torches last night was one for his year?

Not really. In the preview it looked really great, but the way it was executed in the episode wasn't really all that epic or iconic. Since I can't really think of any iconic moments right now, I'll just stick with your idea of the torches, even though I kinda feel as though we still haven't gotten a single, epic scene anywhere near as excellent as when the light in the hatch lit up.

The ever-so-clumsy kiss between Jack and Kate could end up being iconic, depending on how they resolve it.
I thought the previews were saying something like "Jack's flashback will show us something that could be very bad for a Kate and Jack relationship."... clearly, hat was bad paraphrasing, but you know what i mean... if so, what was it? That Jack was nearly faithful?? seems odd...

I don't think the torch scene was iconic, simply because the scene didn't come off as dramatic and tense as it was intended to be. You would think that finally coming face to face with the Others would be a huge moment, but somehow it just... wasn't. The episode overall was just so-so.

People may have been disappointed with the ep, but I wouldn't be surprised if the writers meant for the first encounter between the Losties and the Others to be one of those moments.
