What was the signal light in the bunker (swan station) for?
When Locke is having his breakdown and then the hatch lights up? What is the real reason it does so??
When they lower themselves down the chute of the hatch, you can see the series of mirrors that are set up to reflect the light. Then, once they are closer to the "apartment" part of the hatch, you see the beacon light itself, but what is its purpose?
The hatch has been sealed to never be opened. So, it is not to provide light into the shaft for any reason. The window of the hatch was the part that was more or less exposed on the ground when Locke first came upon it. So, it is clearly for projecting a light beacon into the night sky. Also, on the oceanicflight815 site, the picture of the island shows the beacon shooting up from the island. So, what is it for?

Good question my friend. All those mirrors had to be there for a reason. Maybe a distress signal?

Maybe by looking throught the mirrors then whoever is in the hatch at the time could see something coming or maybe even flying over head.
