Does anyone know what happened to Hurley's dad? I don't recall any conversations or comments about him. His mom reminds Hurley that they are Catholic at one point. She seems religious in a way (Jesus on the phone). I doubt if it was divorce. Hurley was in the mental hospital and did say he "put his family through a lot recently." Anybody got any ideas? We have all the time in the world to dink around with stuff like this.

Maybe his dad is Lenny.
I can't remember how old Lenny is, it's just a guess off the top of my head.

I actually wondered fleetingly about this while watching Walkabout. During the whole "Charlie the fisherman" B-story, Charlie and Hurley are in the water and not having any luck. Charlie says, "I thought you said you knew how to fish!" To which Hurley replies, "Yeah, when it's with my old man off the harbor with a fishing pole!" Now...I hate to be nit picky, but he IS using the imperfect tense when he says "fishing". Implying that his father is still alive. Granted, they probably changed Hurley's story around a bit since that line or the sentence itself just wasn't grammatically correct, but it's still something to chew on.

maybe Hurley was somehow responsible for his father's death, which is why he was in a psychiatric hospital ?

I don't see where you're coming from with that. If his father had died, would he call it a fish pole or something? Wheeesh, over my head.

Maybe Hurley's dad is permanently in a mental institution. After all, mental illness does tend to run in families.

Whoops, I screwed up. You're right evilgus "fishing pole" is a noun and not subject to tenses. I'm terrible with grammer and I'm forgetting the right word here. Any English teachers want to help me out?

I take Latin...tenses have been hammered into my brain since seventh grade...for some reason that's the only part of the language I remember.
