This is probably being discussed elsewhere, but I thought I'd get something going here. The book in the hatch that the Dharma orientation movie reel was behind is The Turn of the Screw. If you haven't read it, the basic run down is a gentleman in late 19th Century inherits a neice and nephew after their parents die. He wants nothing to do with them, so hires a governess to see to all their needs in a creepy old country manor. He demands that she deal with everything, never bother him. While there, the governess sees ghosts of recently dead forbidden lovers and thinks they are trying to take over the children. Things escalate into a terrible climax in which one of the kids dies and we are left wondering if the governess is crazy or not.
The obvious parallels between the story and Lost relate to Ana Lucia and the two tailie children. She feels responsible for them and that she must rescue them from evil forces. There is no one except the other members of the "household" to help her. Things escalated for her until now she has accidently killed Shannon under the pretext of protecting her group.
I also wonder if Ana Lucia has screwed up before in life and a child died while in her protection. She seems unrealistically attached to the outcome of getting those kids home safely.
Interestingly the forbidden lovers in the story that became ghosts could reflect on Boone and Shannon. Even though they were not related by blood, I think most people would agree that a sexual relationship for them is taboo. In the whispers we think we hear Boone talking to Shannon. Will we shart to hear Shannon talking to Sayid?
But, what does the Dharma Swan Station have to do with The Turn of the Screw? Is the Dharma similar to the gentleman? Just push the button and don't bother us ever with anything?
What do you all everybody think?
