I'm new to this forum thing, and computer challenged, but here goes.
I've been thinking about Dr. Jack's very overreactive emotional outbursts surrounding finding Desmond in the hatch. Perhaps running into Desmond first in the stadium and then later on this island messes with his scientific mind world view.
After he ran into Desmond the first time the patient (his wife) he thought he had failed had a miraculous recovery. Since Dr. Jack doesn't seem to believe in miracles, Desmond's words "What if you didn't fail her?" likely bothered him and he remembered Desmond for saying them after Jack's wife is healed.
Then with a zillion to one odds he runs into Desmond in the hatch. That has to be absolutely terrifying for someone who doesn't believe in anything more than chance and science running the universe. We're talking about Dr. Jack questioning everything he knows and believes. Also, Locke just had a conversation of faith vs. science and destiny with Dr. Jack. Jack sees the photo of normal Desmond and contrasts it with what Desmond is like now and how the two of them are pointing guns at each other in a hatch on an island, and it is too much for him to take. Especially since Locke appears to be "right." I think we all know how science people can get very upset and defensive when they can't explain the supernatural.
I don't know if the woman in the picture is important, but I think all of Dr. Jack's behavior could be explained on simple psychological reactions alone.

Well, whether this turns out to be true or not, it's nice to hear something new! I do believe the girl is important (because it's Lost), but not as important as everyone expects her to be. So I can totally see this being the case. Nice

No, I'm pretty sure it's a publicity photo.

notice that charlie has a tie on, that's what he's wearing IN his first flashbacks, but he wouldn't be having a flashback IN his flashback, lol, so ya, probably just a publicity shot

I agree Annie, Jack's hyper emotional outbursts when he encounters Desmond in the hatch I think have a lot to do with the fact of the situation itself - the fusies possibly being under attack by the others, he didn't know where Kate had disappeared to, and he had just had that talk with Locke (see Jay's Locke antedotes, chapter 1, for reference). I also agree though with Sawyer who says, this is Lost so the photo must mean something. very interesting.

I can imagine an entire episode of Charlie just sitting down and having flashbacks of flashbacks of flashbacks, etc.

Yep that would be funny. And possible if he takes up heroine again.

Heroin induced flashbacks...good times for us....bad times for Charlie...

Yep. But it would also introduce a new plot. There is a huge store of heroine on the island, can Charlie really quit?

Oh, it's definitely going to play a big part. I think Charlie's got a lot of things going for him now. He has his thing with Claire and he's clearly enamored with Aaron. I think something really bad's going to have to happen to him to start using again. And, with ALL that heroin, opens up the danger of overdose.
