I read some speculations about Desmond being an Other. But I think that reversing the question/affirmation has also to be considered.
It is possible that those people have been recruited to go to the others stations doing other stuff as silly as "pushing the button". But when they realized that no one is going to replace them and that their brain was being tampered with the serums they were also injecting themselves as Desmond, they started to come out of their stations.
Then they found each other and realized that Dharma crashes planes on the island and want all the kids they can find. These "Other Desmonds" thought that kidnapping the kids then delivering them to Dharma would be a way to trade for food or a cure to their illness.
With "the serum tampering the brain" and "Other Desmonds" theories, it is also possible to explain the violence of Ethan but Goodwin's composure: Goodwin's has stopped taking the serum before Ethan, so ethan is more infected by the serum.
Moreover, it would explain something I've never understood, Goodwin's has the US Army Knife but he never knew that it was US Army before Ana-Lucia told him. So it is possible that he wasn't able to read the words as he has that induced dyslexia.

The serum theory is interesting.
I think that when Goodwin was looking at the knife he was looking at the side opposite the stamp. But I also think Goodwin may have been playing ignorant when Ana-Lucia sprang that on him, and Ana wanted to see his reaction. As a cop, she probably has a pretty good BS detector.

But Goodwin had this knife for a long time right ? I may have to rewatch the scene but he has this knife all along. So one way or another he should have noticed this stamp.
And it would be strange that from the beginning he told Ana Lucia that he is or was in the Peace Corps but then tried to test her by not telling her that it's an US Army knife.

That wasn't Goodwin's knife. They got it off of the Other teenage girl that Ana Lucia killed, along with the list. Remember?

I must admit that I may have missed it even if I rewatch the episode as this knife story was bothering me.
I have to check it, thanks
