Ok, so a quick theory on why we all die if MIB leaves and destroys the Island...
If the Island was 'the source' of the planet Earth's magnetism then if the Island was destroyed we would all die. Why? Solar winds my friend. The Magnetic Field around the planet Earth protects us from the Solar Winds and without this our atmosphere would be blown away in an instant...and we all die.
