OK so my mind has been messed up in the last week l since Lost finished and I've been trying to piece a few things together that the show never answered. I was starting to wonder if the afterlife was in fact created by the Smokemonster, the logic being that both he and Jacob had demonstrated some controls over the Island's special properties (life,death,rebirth)and Smokey's confident promise to Sayid that he could see the love of his life again, I.e. Shannon. He also had the knowledge needed of everyone to create this world through the various flashes of people. Ok, so here goes nothing... What if in the last scenes Christian as we'd seen before was in fact Smokey!? Could this be HIS redemption, or was this the Shepherd leading the lambs to the slaughter! Now that would have been a nice twist! Have fun with this one!

It would be interesting if the afterlife was as we saw it, but that it in fact was created by smokey. I'm sure this is not what the writer's intentions are, but it would be a cool way to look at it.

I think him promising to give Shannon to Sayid was just going to be him reappearing as Shannon to Sayid, however.
