I sent this in as "listener feedback", but wanted to get it out there to see what you guys think.....
I was lying in bed on Saturday night, listening to LOST podcasts as I fell asleep and this hit me. My theory kind of runs on tangents, so I'll do my best to try and stay linear. Sorry if it is a little long and wordy.
Assuming that The Island, The Smoke Monster, and The Whispers are all related; and assuming that The Whispers and Smoke Monster work in tandem to protect the Island and do it's bidding. Then the people who appear as "visions" on the Island is the smoke monster manifesting itself to protect the Island.
Assuming that The Smoke Monster has scanned everyone on the Island (or at least the central players) when it does manifest, it does so with someone or something that would have importance to the person Smokey was delivering the message to. It seems to me that when someone does see a "vision" or manifestation it comes to them as someone they have killed, hurt, or worse on the Island. For example, Eko saw Yemi and Jack saw Christian. Both, whose bodies were on the Island and both of who were driven to death by Eko and Jack. Yemi took Eko's place on the drug plane and Jack drove Christian to alcoholism and his eventual death. Ben saw his mother, who he "killed" during child birth, and Locke saw Boone who he sent to his death (more on that later). I do not count Walt because we know he is "special" and I don't think Dave, Kate's Horse, and things along those lines are related. I find all this to be very interesting and this all leads to my theory.....
When Locke had to "talk" to the Island and went into his sweatbox, not only did he see Boone but he saw ALL the survivors of Flight 815 as well as Ben and Desmond. So, if the smoke monster presents itself as someone who has been killed or harmed by the person it is "talking" to, is it possible that Locke ends up killing/hurting all the people he saw in the airport during his vision. Is it possible that is why Hurley is "sorry"? Is that why "We need to go back!!!!.? Is it possible Locke ends up being the "Big Bad".
Like I said, it came to me while trying to fall asleep, so I hope it makes sense. I think it is pretty cool and makes sense.
