(sorry if I'm repeating this theory, but it came to me as I was listening to J&J debate Locke on the 30 hour today.)
John Locke is dead. However, Smokie was able to "scan" his dead body and take on both his form, personality, and memories. Maybe call this his soul. At a minimum, we have seen many evidences that unLocke possesses Locke's personalities and memories. This is not disputed. And we have in fact seen the occurrences of Locke shining through growing.
I theorize that one of "The Wars" that are coming is the battle for MIB's body by Locke's "soul". Locke's true "soul" (or at least his personality and memories) are slowly taking over MIB, and will eventually (in the Finale) win and take over MIB's body, leaving no trace of the original MIB. Locke will finally get his redemption, however in a new body. Beyond Locke's personality shining through ("Dont tell me what I can't do!"), it is possible we have already seen the growing evidence of the actual battle in the form of MIB's "twitches" when talking about his Mom.
We could argue forever about the philosophical discussion around whether a full copy of your personalities/memories placed into another body is still you. So, let's just use the assumption as is made most often in SciFi that clones, body swaps, transporters (such as in Star Trek which just make a copy of your atoms via transmission of data and not the actual atoms), downloading your consciousness into a robot, etc, are still mostly considered you, even in another body.
And this is, in fact, JACOB'S LOOPHOLE. Jacob knew that Jacob himself would have to die in order to trap MIB in Locke's form and this was the only way to beat him. This was one of the main reasons he stood by and allowed himself to be murdered. (Even Ben's "test" was required to lead to Ben's redemption.)
Taking this once step further, Jacob knew that LOCKE (even dead) was the final candidate needed to defeat MIB and thereby take on the job of protecting the island. The other candidates are important to get him there, but Locke will be our big winner in the end.
This show is all about the dead influencing the living, so why not here as well? And who said "Dead is Dead" ?? !!
