What always bugged (pun intended) me about LOST was how animals were able to fly over the Island - as in Par Avion when Claire tries to use a pigeon to send a message to the outside world. Even the Hurley bird found its way to the island and of course the fish and bugs and other animals.
It would be a cop out to say that all the beings on the island were transported by Dharma/Black Rock/etc or indigenous to the Island.
I know that North America had no rats or horses until they were brought here and bred.
But especially with Par Avion the birds were migrational and had no trouble flying over the island.

Maybe Jacob went to every pet store, horse farm, and exotic bird store and touch all the animals

Perhaps, unbeknownest to Claire and the Losties, the second the birds took flight again they all got nosebleeds and crashed into the ocean.
Or maybe they're on some bizarro time loop like the food drops might be.
