the funny thing is how do they all know that he is stuck now? I mean has jacob (or his predecessor) ever died before? Shouldn't it be unknown what would happen to unLocke when Jacob dies?

Maybe it has happened before. Or the other way around.

I tend to agree that Smokie being stuck as Locke lends credence to the theory that they're one and the same, just because otherwise it wouldn't make sense that the death of Jacob would affect Smokie at all. It must have to do with the "rules" they're playing by, that you can't harm a candidate, that Man in Black couldn't kill Jacob, that Ben couldn't kill Widmore.

Well, see exactly. If it's that MIB couldn't kill Jacob because they're the same guy, then that's almost like suggesting Widmore and Ben are really the same guy too or something.

I've gone back and forth on weather there the same person/being. I've finally chosen to believe that they are separte people/beings. Mostly because if they where the same person/being then how would you explain the smoke monster going after Locke whom was suppose to be a canidate. That would mean that Jacob would be allowing canidates to be killed.

On the official podcast this week D and C say that it wasn't conveyed clear enough on the show, but the 'official' reason that MIB is stuck in Locke's form is because Jacob is dead. That would suggest to me (barring more explanation) that they are two halves of one whole. A light side and a dark side that have now split by way of MIB's newly discovered 'loophole'.
Just my 2c.
