in order: Sigur Rós So far, they released 4 complete solid albums. I might not understand them, but I feel their music more than any. The National Lyrically amazing. I like that it's fragments of an image. parts of it don't apply to me, and some make perfect sense. My favorite song is Slow Show and it has the line "I leaned on the wall and the wall leaned away." trippy. Animal Collective Very creative. I can't find any other band that sounds like them. And whenever i find a band that gets billed as "for fans of AC," it's always a let down. Yndi Halda They used to be an instrumental post-rock band, but they announced on their myspace that they were going to add more vocals. So i guess i'll see if they'll stay on my top 5, but from the only album they released so far, it's 4 songs that average out to 15 minutes and each of them are insane in how the build ups keep going and the climax of the songs are always rewarding. Moving Mountains Another young band, but they mix so many genres together, it's like they made an album just for me. I have a link to their album in my sig so check it out. I like them because of how they echo in my minds hours after the song is finish playing. The harmonies are done well and the recurring lyrics throughout the whole album.

1. Pixies - Something about their music is just amazing. I can listen to them for hours and not get bored once, so many of their songs sound so different from each other.
2. Air - Another band that I can listen to a lot of songs of at once. They definitely aren't as intense as Pixies, but they are the best band to listen to whenever I want to relax.
3. Outkast - They incorporate so many other genres into hip-hop that it's mindblowing. Funk, Rock, Jazz, even Electronic.
4. Nine Inch Nails - They have been one of my favorites for years. Trent treats music as beautiful art, and succeeds. It's amazing to find an artist who has stayed (almost) consistently great for over 20 years.
5. The Beatles - enough said.
Honorable mentions (rounding out the top 10): Elvis Costello, Sigur Rós, The White Stripes, The Velvet Underground, PJ Harvey

It's boring to give my all time fav.s (The Beatles, U2, bla bla bla), so here are the 5 that I'm listening to the most right now:
THE SMITHS: I only recently discovered the depressing joys of this short-lived-eighties-groundbreaking band and I identify with Morrissey's anguished lyrics to a painful degree. And the band's sound was guitar based awesomeness in an era of synth-crap.
RADIOHEAD: "In Rainbows" has reignited my interest in this great band just as I was losing patience with them.
ROXY MUSIC: In less than a decade, this group, led by one of my favorite singers Bryan Ferry developed, grew, and pushed the boundaries of rock in the 70's and early 80's.
THE PIXIES: Listening to this great band again since "Gouge Away" in the Lost finale.
COLDPLAY: been a fan for a while. Very impressed with the new album.

here are mine
The Beatles: No, I'm not just saying this because they're always at the top of these lists, but because I love their music. The music effects me in a certain way that makes them mean more to me than all they're legacies and publicity. They are the greatest. You can come close to them, but never surpass.
The Shins: A modern Pyschedlic band, the lyrics and melodies of this band morphs in a strange, haunting way and makes you think about more than just the music.
Oasis: Biggest band in England. The Gallagher brothers (Liam and Noel whom founded the band) have such a great chemistry and remind me a lot of the Beatles and I know that the Beatles had a HUMONGOUS influence in the band (Liam Gallagher say's he feels he is Lennon reincarnated)
Radiohead: Another U.K. band, great music, Thom Yorke is a fantastic vocalist and the band has had a great new album and past albums. The future belongs to Radiohead
Coldplay: I love this band because they can be hard rock-ish (twisted logic) or very sensitive and calming (clocks). Over all I think this band has much to offer and I think the new album is pheonominal. Great music to just sit back and think with.
Honorable mentions: Led Zeppelin (hard choice to leave them out but I LOVE their music)Wolfmother, Dave Matthews Band, Muse, Incubus, Bob Dylan, Pink Floyd

1. Led Zeppelin- Need I say anything? Greatest rock band ever. 2. Pink Floyd- Very close second. I love every single album and song they have ever done. "Dark Side of the Moon" is the greatest album ever, IMO. 3. Boston- Gets slammed for only having one good album, but it is a fantastic one, one of the greats. Every song from the record is classic, and I actually like some of their later stuff, just not near as much as the first. 4. Umphrey's McGee- Known as a "jam band", but these guys are also the most skilled musicians I've ever seen. They improv on the spot, and kick a$$ at it, which is a huge plus for me, do incredible covers, and not to mention, their original stuff is fantastic. Also, they release their live concerts over the internet in the form of a podcast, so you should check them out. 5. Stone Temple Pilots- My favorite '90's band, not much left to be said. They just rock.
