Chinatown - an all time classic - would crush a film like The Long Goodbye. If you were going to go that route, better to pit it against a detective noir classic like The Maltese Falcon.
Not that most of the younguns who listen to the podcast would have seen either film (sigh...kids today).
Jack Nicholson films would be another cool way to go (he's my all time favorite actor)
Chinatown vs. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest vs. the Shining would be awesome (yes, one could easily slide in Five Easy Pieces, Prizzi's Honor, Witches of Eastwick, As Good As it Gets or even Batman, but I think those three are a good enough competition).
I've already done some Clint faceoffs (Dirty Harry vs. The Man With No Name), although one could just do Clint westerns, and boil 'em down to the essentials: Good. Bad & the Ugly vs. Outlaw Josey Wales vs. Unforgiven. Again, films like High Plains Drifter, Hang 'em High, Pale Rider and the other 2 Leone films could slide in here as well, but those are the essential three.
And, think of Podcast Jack again, a Paul Newman one could be: The Hustler vs. Cool Hand Luke vs. Butch Cassidy & the Sundance Kid vs. The Sting. Again, films like Slap Shot, The Verdict, and Hud among others could be here as well --- even The Color of Money - but again, the ones I selected would be the essentials.
Steve Martin films? The Jerk vs. All Of Me vs. The Man With Two Brains vs. Roxanne vs. Planes Trains & Autombiles?
Eddie Murphy when he was still drop dead funny? 48 Hrs. vs. Trading Places vs. Beverly Hills Cop?
I did a Bill Murray one on that same infamous November 23rd posting...
Or Scorcese: Mean Streets vs. Taxi Driver vs. Raging Bull vs. The Departed (we can skip his emptier Oscar bait attempts)...
Lastly, for the true film fans out there, Alfred Hitchc0ck films: Psycho vs. Rear Window vs. North by Northwest vs. Vertigo vs. Strangers on a Train. Although it hurts me not to have Notorious or Shadow of a Doubt in there, and frankly, The Birds just doesn't deserve to be there, so it's not.
Well, there's little chance of any of these being used (so less chance of my being whiny)...but still fun to post anyways...

OK - here's kind of an off the wall suggestion - Movies based in and shot (for the most part) in Philadelphia.
We could start with the Bruce Willis Trilogy - "The 6th Sense", "Unbreakable" and "The 12 Monkeys". Then there is every "Rocky Movie" except "Rocky IV" (but that's OK - that one stunk). Add to those "Trading Places", "Philadelphia" (I met just about everybody in the cast except Tom Hanks while riding in the elevator of the building I worked in at the time - their production office was 2 floors above where I worked), "Blow Out", "Witness (about the 1st half hour of the movie).
For me it would be "The 6th Sense" VS "Trading Places" VS "Philadelphia" VS "Rocky".

"Signs" was better? All that build up for "swing away"? We wait for a truly dramatic climax, and all we ended up with was a quasi-religious message?
Both "The Sixth Sense" AND "Unbreakable" were FAR better than the flick where aliens can get to Earth but haven't mastered how to open a door.
Ugh. And I actually liked it better than anyone else I know who's seen it - so you can imagine how others felt about it.
But I'l give you this - it was better than "The Village" - essentially a Twilight Zone stretched over two hours - and one in which you can anticipate the "twist" less than a 1/4 of the way through, so all you do is sit there waiting for them to get to it already.
* * * * *
Some more silly ideas:
Frankenstein (actually, Frankenstein's monster) vs. Dracula (yeah, we could open that up to the Wolfman too)
The Marx Brothers vs. The Three Stooges Cerebral classic comedy vs. Physical slapstick classic comedy (if we wanted to open this up more for old comedy teams - one could then add Laurel & Hardy and Abbott & Costello, for example)
Icon Showdowns: James Cagney vs. Humphrey Bogart John Wayne vs. Clint Eastwood Steve McQueen vs. Paul Newman
or go a little bit more modern... Robert De Niro vs. Al Pacino Bill Murray vs. Steve Martin Richard Pryor vs. Eddie Murphy
Ah, too many to think of...brain frying!

Thats a good idea! I agree with whoever said that The Sixth Sense would probably take it, but I would definitely vote for Signs. That's been in my top 5 since I first saw it when it came out.

I thought the Mel Brooks' movies versus was a good idea. "Blazzing Saddles" vs. "Young Frankenstein" vs. "The Producers" vs. "Spaceballs"...and maybe more if someone deemed it necessary.
Or "The Daily Show" vs. "The Colbert Report". Wow, that would be tough!

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this idea already (sorry if someone did) but here is my idea for a versus: Classic (Board) Games!I'm gonna list as many games as I can remember from my childhood that I remember playing and I gave a link from wikipedia of others if I forgot any (which I probably did). Monopoly Life Clue Scrabble Battleship Operation Candy Land Chutes and Ladders Mouse Trap 1313 Dead End Drive (this is probably not a classic game but I loved playing it as a kid) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_board_gamesI was also thinking that another great versus would be: Checkers vs. Chess vs. Backgammon vs. Chinese Checkers
