I think right about the second or third episode of season three, right after Jacob's list was mentioned I had posted a thread called Jacob=Smokey. I am pretty sold on this being the case.

Maybe she just doesn't know. It's not like she's seen Jacob!

I wonder if Richard has seen Jacob only because he seems to have been there along time. I wonder how Ben found Jacob also.

I'd agree with you there bigdog. I'd be willing to bet Richard has either seen Jacob...or is Jacob. He seems to be a guide to Ben, and almost like a mentor, kinda like Jacob. One way or another I'm sure Richard is associated with him.

I dont think Jacob is the smoke monster. I do think that Jacob wanted Locke to help him protect the island. I dont think he is a hostage of Ben's. I think that Richard came to the island when the Black Rock was shipwrecked. Somehow he has stopped aging. Im not sure about that one. It would seem that he wouldnt want to leave the island if he doesnt age but Ive seen him off the island when they recruited Juliet.

I don't think Jacob IS the smoke monster, but I thing Jacob knows what it is, and maybe even controls it...

OK - just to weigh in here - and I think I posted this somewhere else on this forum - the Smoke Monster both is and isn't Jacob. I know that doesn't make any sense - but let me explain.
We have all seen - and heard - Jacob say "Help Me" - to me that means he is trapped where he is - he cannot leave the "circle of power" that holds him where he is - the "circle of power" being the salty ash that Locke noticed when Ben took him to the cabin.
While Jacob cannot physically leave there - he can let his mind and spirit if you will - with the help of the island's special powers - escape the bounds of the circle and observe what is happening on the island - taking either the form of smoke - or physical beings (a horse, a priest, a father, a child) that he sees in the minds of the LOSTies.
What I find interesting is the "Blackness" of the appearances to our LOSTies. To Eko - his brother - dressed in his Catholic priests's outfit. Kate's horse, jack's father in his black burial suit - Walt in very dark clothes while he spoke backward to Shannon and dribbled water. It could also be that - in Jacob's mind - he equated those of Afican descent with "Black".
All of this is something of a theory that I am working on for a story I am writing having to do with LOST. We'll see where it goes
