I'm going to summarize what was found about the numbers - somewhat spoilerish if you haven't been following the video fragments.
Just found in the UK, a new glyph leading to a new video fragment of Alvar Hanso talking. He states that the Valenzetti Equation predicts when humanity will destroy itself. This equation was based on some sort of variables input into it to get the result. DHARMA was set up to research how to affect these variables and potentially change the equations result. The new glyph reveals that "The radio tower on the island is set up to broadcast the core numeric values from the equation".
So, then, presumably those off the island could then monitor the broadcast and if the numbers changed then they would know that DHARMA was successful in their research to change the equation and save humanity. It appears as though they failed and were not able to change anything - although this is speculation based on comments by Mittelwerk at the end of the video, who may not be a reliable source of information.
This doesn't completely explain the bad luck of the numbers, etc. but this is just released and more information may come out soon to better explain how the numbers tie into everything.

There is some evidence that these numbers may be a bit deeper than what I'm describing, but it isn't entirely revealed as of yet. Certainly it seems as though DHARMA felt that they were almost battling them. |

Here is the current direct quotes from Alvar himself and Mittelwerk in the film regarding the numbers:
Alvar:
When, through your research, you manage to change the numerical value of any one of these factors.... we will know that the one true way has been found.
Only by manipulating the environment, by finding scientific solutions to all of our problems... will we be able to change those core factors and give humanity a chance to survive.
The transmitter will only broadcast the core numerical values of the Valenzetti Equation. (also mentions the broadcast being encrypted)
That is the work to which you have comitted yourselves. Change the core values of the Valenzetti Equation, and you will change the course of destiny. (presumably to DHARMA initiates)
Mittelwerk:
This inscrutable Equation keeps bringing us back into the Numbers.
We have tried to change those values by manipulating the environment in many, many ways, and in spite of every effort of the Foundation, we are gripped in the tyranny of those six Numbers.
Kinda seems like the numbers were as much of a curse for DHARMA and humanity... |

Don't the numbers have somthing to twith that Avar Hanso eqation that would predict the end of the war, thus explanning all those Hatchs/bunkers

could it be that in attempting to change the numbers they actually made things worse and the others are disgruntled ex dharma disciples who are now fighting to stop this from being repeated again and the plane crash was essentially a way to get new ppl on the island who would replace the rebellious others who refuse to work for DHARMA and would unknowlingly perform all the functions required to change the equation,,,

research stations set up to look at somehow changing the "environment" in order to somehow affect the numbers and the valenzetti equation. The equation didn't predict the end of a war, but the destruction of humanity. By doing their research they were hoping to save humanity.
