I tend to question authority, and I don't care much for the establishment. But trust me: if the rebellion loses it's focus, and we start to sacrifice our cause for power, there will be blood...

It's metaphorical. Probably the most literal in the climax when The Hand initiates the nuke against Flagg. There is also several references to Mother Abigail battling or repelling Flagg in her dreams. I don't specifically know who the white represents, but the black is obviously a crow, Flagg's image.
