Was there at Moscone when it was announced.
Looks like a very nice piece of hardware. They had two out in these special glass pedestals that had people all crowded around them taking pictures - seriously all day long on the floor there were at least 25-35 people crowded in a circle shoot video and pictures with 3-4 guards/techs protecting them
They gave some presentations using working prototypes of the phone and all in all it is very slick. The UI integration is really way beyond anything else out there. The hardware integration looks pretty good. The screen is very high resolution - lie 160 dpi or so - it is 480x320, but only 3.5 diagonal. most of the touch interaction seems to work well, but no one was allowed to handle or try the units, so who really knows. The keyboard looked pretty squeezed, and I think probably may have some ergonomic issues with it when you get down to entering e-mails and SMS's - supposedly there is a new kind of predictive text entry that is pretty good that helps cover this deficiency, but if you are entering anything not typically in the dictionary (like names, etc.) this might be frustrating.
The voicemail presented like e-mails, where you can play them in any order, scrub the timeline like an audio file, etc. was very cool. The widget integration also was very nice. Much of the gesture inputs look to work really well.
All in all a nice device and really well integrated - way better than other cell phones.
I'd love to see an ipod version that had no phone, with more memory. I think the 8 gb limit is tied to the fact that it isn't hard drive basedbut flash memory based.

Cool, thanks for the enlightning report! +109 tbh I wouldn't mind one without phone either, but with all those other nifty extras like wifi browsing, pic viewer and widgets. Hey, can it play video too? would be even slicker.

Hey, can it play video too? would be even slicker. yes, it can. Apple's website says that the videos are played in widescreen, so I think you turn it sideways to watch the video. Here is Apple's QuickTour of the video.

Yeah the video they had it playing was very clean and smooth. Also it has a sensor to tell how you have it oriented and it switched portrait to landscape on the fly as you rotate the phone. It actually does this in a number of applications, not just video.

I think what people are going to have to do with the 8GB is just put on what they absolutley want.
I'm running 35GB now on my 60GB VideoPod, but I'll probably just dump Green Day + Jay and Jack and a few LOST eps over there and that'll be enough for me.
You can't look at this as an iPod, you gotta look at it as an all in one. Imagine how insanely useful that will be!
If the price is somewhat reasonable I'll probably pick one up. Anyone know how cell phone service providers are set up? It's adverstised with Cingular (which I have no problem with) but can you use Alltel or T-Mobile or Sprint with it?

as an avid mac enthusist I am sad to say I dont want one
1. if I am gunna store music and videos I need a lot more than 8 gb's 30 isnt even cuttin it anymore on my ipod video 2. the battery life is wack as a phone, I can go about 3 days now without needing to charge my phone and 16 hours is ridiculously short 3. release this thing without the phone part give it a massive hard drive and keep the wi-fi and say its the 6th gen ipod and I will buy it in the first week
I really hope they plan on doing this, guess I need to wait for steve jobs next keynote at the mac confrence thing in the fall

At least for now it seems to be tied to cingular. It looks like Apple really worked them over to adjust their back end infrastructure to support certain features, especially the voicemail feature where they show up like e-mails. An unlocked version would mean that it would be crippled and I don't see Apple doing that, at least not at launch. They may end up partnering it out if other carriers commit to supporting it right. I'd think of the sidekick - it wouldn't be very useful to have a sidekick without the t-mobile backend making all the features work - hence you don't tend to see unlocked versions.
Also, I completely agree, I think a larger version of the ipod with a hard drive and no phone would make a ton of sense. I don't think it is an issue of if, but when. This really seems to be Job's baby - he is completely in love with it (think the Apple cube, if anyone remembers that). It very well could be they will not release any other ipod versions because they want this to have a chance to get popular. I really hope it doesn't go this direction. If nothing else it seemed pretty clear that there were a lot of other things Apple has had in the works they should have been announcing (like new features in Panther, iLife 07, etc) that they chose not to, I think specifically to not dilute this announcement.

well in his keynote he was saying how 06 was big but apple has a lot of big plans for 07 theres 2 big events that happen in the year for macs theres mac world which is what just happened and we saw the announcements (apple tv, iphone, and changing the name of the company) then there is the convention in the fall and I cant remember the name of it right now, that second one is when jobsy announces new ipods and stuff because its the holidays, so expect an announcement in the fall, hopefully a new ipod announcement
speaking of ilife and the new OS anyone now when they are coming out? i know the OS is coming in the spring but what about ilife
