Idol is a personality contest whether it be the single mother that is trying to make it big, or the nice guy that never got a chance. You become attached to the people, and you buy the Cd's based on the fact that you like their personalty and how they came across on a reality show. You are so connected to these people that you think you really like the music, but you like the people first, music second. That isn't what music is about. Music is an art, a form of expression. It should be treated with the same respect as a painting, or a sculpture, and Idol doesn't do that. Thank you. I've been trying to figure out why I hate this show and that's pretty much it. I think so many people who want to make it - and actually audtion, or know someone who has - see Idol as a "short-cut" or some kind of lottery ticket. I'm sure some people don't really think about it, but the easy way is very attractive sometimes. Some who audition may have really worked hard but still may not think about the artistic aspect of making music, or figure there's plenty of time for that later. Unfortunately, the producers of Idol probably haven't thought much about it either, or if they have, figure that the bottom-line and personality really are more important than anything else. I have noticed that whether the contestants are horrible or great, that's what comes through, and the show is designed to put that on display. What might be a step away from that (but might be cost-prohibitive or just not as popular) would be a show that really shows artists being artists and spotlighting their creativity and expression, not just auditioning for a recording contract, or a spot in a band. Sorry - bored at work. I'll put it away now. ETA: OK, one more thing. When enough people - from TV execs on down to the casual TV viewer - think that personality really is more important than artistic expression - Idol is what happens. And from the perspective of people I know who like it, the idea of "winning the lottery" by winning a contest like this, where you don't necessarily have to be the very best singer or the most talented musician - is exciting for them to watch. Personally, when I think of what music means to me, Idol doesn't get it. Ok, now I'm really done!

Contestants DO see Idol as a lottery ticket, or a quick road to fame... however, I get the impression some of you (including Jay) thing winning Idol is easy. Its not. Hundreds of thousands of people try out cross country. They go through rounds and rounds of auditions before they even get to be auditioned for the judges. Then they have to "win America." Then, that one person out of hundreds of thousands, will get a record deal. In no way are they assured becoming a musical superstar, Ruben proved that... all they earn is a record deal, its their own talent that will take them any further. Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have amazing voices, and musical talent, that is why they are famous, not because viewers were emotionally attached to them on the show. People get attached to many contestants, and most of them never even land a record deal. And as for Jay saying Kelly Clarkson is just liek the average female pop artist, like Avril Lagvine or Ashlee Simpson... Kelly is so much better. Have you heard "Breakaway?" Not only does she have a powerful voice, but she does something most other artists don't ever do... she emotes the songs. She gets the meaning behind the song, and presents that through her vocals. She even gets 100% behind songs which she hasn't wirtten. Plus, Kelly wrote alot of the songs on Breakaway, so this isn't all being handed to her on a silver platter. Jay, listen to the live version of a song called "Beautiful Disaster," from the Breakaway album, and tell me she's an average female pop singer.

Hmmm this is my take on the whole thing. I agree Idol is mostly a personality contest. However, that's why everyone in this world who has amazing voices are not always heard. I think that is a good thing. You can have an amazing voice but be a dull bland person. And let's face it. As amazing as The Beatles were, they were Pop. They were personalities. And THAT'S why they were good. It was a combination of all 3. Believe me if John Lennon drove a bus and didn't have his "personality" he could have all the talent in the world but no one would have ever heard him. But, it was his passion along with his talent that made him an artist.
Now I am turned off by American Idol. I do watch it occasionaly when it airs. I do cheer for one or 2 of the contestants. However, I have a hard time dismissing everyone on the basis of the contest. Being involved in music since I was..wel before I can remember. I appreciate a voice and a personality. Kelly Pickler's voice is well...leaves much to be desired. However, she draws a certain crowd to listen to her and that is part of the whole thing.
Elvis was brilliant. Elvis was pop and personality and he was passionate about what he sung. I know it was a combination of all of those things.
I do agree music should be treated as an art form along the lines of sculpting and painting. However, remember that music is a audio AND visual experience. Anyone who has ever been to a concert will probably agree with me. A band who plays and sings amazingly but performs poorly <there is a difference> will probably not impress too many people. This is true even in orchestras.
I like to take every piece of music/video/art and judge it in context. From listening to Beethoven's 5th on a record player to watching American Idol. I think one should appreciate any art in the context in which it is displayed.

I definately don't think it's easy - I think many contestants think it will be and they will be rich and famous just because of the exposure. Maybe one or two will - maybe. For the rest, it might be a good experience for them but not quite what they expected.

No offense but AI is a piece of cake compared to real life auditions. It might seem hard. But it's a lot harder to write your own music, write your own lyrics, find a band that you can connect with. It also is a lot harder to make create a name, and find the right design that will look good with the name. Than make shirts, cds, and posters. And of course the hardest thing is to find a following. AI is THE easy route, no matter what people think. My friend Chris is 32. One of the best Bass players in Chicago, which he plays in a cover band. Than he has his own original band which he sings. He is the most dedicated person I have ever met when it comes to his craft. And is one of the most talented people I have ever met. He has worked his butt off for the last 15+ years, working on his music, bass, and singing. And the last few years he has been working even harder with his new band to get it's name out there. He goes to every contest, and battle of the bands because he wants to make it so badly. Now that is hard. Only a handful of people that audition for AI would be able to stick it out as long as he has.

Well I for one love the show, it's entertaining to me. I love it when I pick the winner and I have only missed one My point has always been, yes it's an easier way to get your name out there than the hard way that most artist have to do it. But if you're really honest and have an ounce of talent, tell me you wouldn't want the same opprotunity as they get on AI. If I had any, I would die for the chance to be on it, but alas I don't have talent and I am way past the age limit ;D And yes most singers all sound the same, it has been that way for yrs. and yrs. It is thier personalities that keep them going. I loved Chris from the last show, but I just think he got to sure of himself and thought that he was a shoe in to win and that cost him the win. I take the show for what it is, entertainment. I will be watching it when it starts on I believe the 16th of this month.

^Well I think the best example of how much people like AI is its ratings. The highest rated televsion event ever, except the superbowl. And AI is twice a week, its killer. It kills it competition, including The Grammy's and LOST. ABC is smart pushing LOST back an hour. Not only will it get its Idol fans back, but probably a good portion of Idol viewers who are looking for something to watch after Idol. And Jay, (and any others who think the show isn't credible) check out this article. apnews.myway.com//article/20070111/D8MJANCO0.html i think its very interesting regarding the show's credibility.

I hate the Nielsen ratings. They are one of the worst inventions ever.

Thousands of people stand in line for days for a chance of being on television for maybe a couple of seconds. Everyone wants to be a famous celebrity and get rich quick. Sure, at the time that Idol is airing these young people are THE HOTTEST THING. But after they win, nobody thinks twice about them. UNTIL they get out of Idol's contract and get a really good publicist and manager. Idol was making Kelly Clarkson sing easy-listening music at first because they want to appeal to the largest audience. Only when she got out of her contract could she start to make top 40 stuff. I don't know what my point is. It's either "out of sight, out of mind" or Idol needs to let them out of their contracts sooner. That's not gong to happen.
