They cancelled the San Diego show. But I already saw them once this year. And since this is the first time they actually announced a release date, and they fired their goat-loving manager, I can actually believe this one. Oh, and to stay on topic, Idol sucks. They canceled here too, after playing 2 nights before in Chicago. (I live near Milwaukee.) And I almost got a ticket to go to the Milwaukee show, but at the last minute I changed my mind, because I just had a feeling they would cancel. I'm so glad I listened to my instincts. But I did hear from people that saw the Chicago show, said it was awesome. When is the realease date, I just heard they pushed it back until next year, until God knows when. Also Axl had said that it was going to come out this year, someone on the radio was reading a statement from Axl and at the time he said. "There were 12 Tuesdays until the end of the year, it will come out on one of those Tuesdays." I liked seasons 2 and 5 of Idol, those were it. I mean Chris is hot as hell. And Taylor is awesome. And I love Clay. I only flipped on Fox for the last few seconds, and it was perfect because Lost was usually at commercial so I could see who got the boot. I know I should not watch it, because it takes viewers away from Lost, and it ruins the chances for real artists, but it is my guilty pleasure. But I would not mind a chance to kick judge's asses, they are all sooooo annoying.

Am. Idol has brought us some very real talent. Kelly Clarkson, Clay Akien. Chris D. Jennifer Hudson( just nominated for a Golden Globe) Carrie Underwood, Taylor Hicks( who by the way had been playing for yrs. in small towns etc. with his band. Josh(the Marine who sang country) Bo, and I am sure a few more, I think that without the exposure from A I. they might not have ever made it at all. I agree that the judges can be annoying (especially Paula) she drives me nuts and sounds like she's high half the time. I think that they drag the show out a lot, especially the elimination show, way to long. But all in all I enjoy the show, I love seeing new talent make it however they do it. On Wed. night I tape it and I do watch Lost because it's my favorite thing to watch ;D

I don't want to speak for Jay. But we all know that he is a musician, and I know a lot of musicians that hate Idol. Because they take people that don't really work hard for their music. Idol is for people that decide one day, "Hey I think I can sing, I deserve a record contract." And I know people that have worked their butts off just trying to get atleast one song on the radio, and are so talented and yet will never get a contract, because Idol does not look at real talent. There are a few on Idol that you know really want it, because they love to sing, and want to share their music with the world ie Chris, Taylor, and Bo. But majority just want the fame, and money. Of course they want the money and fame that come along with it, but they love playing so much that they would still play even if they never made it big. Someone once told me, "You don't join a band to make money." Most people in bands are broke all the time. Because they put so much into the band they have nothing left. And Idol is so critical of people. Instead of looking at talent they look at looks, and appeal. I understand they want someone that looks nice. But majority of the best voices are there are not from people that are good looking. Rod Stewert, Steve Perry, The 3 Tenors, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Berry White, etc. I think if Idol actually took into fact talent, and not just looks I think they would get more respect from Real Artists. I enjoy watching also, but sometimes the show makes me so made when they don't focus on the real talent. Which is why I wanted Taylor to win, because here was a guy that loved what he was doing. He did not care how ridiculous he looked, he loved what he was doing. And deserved it. I mostly agree with stuff For me Idol does nothing to help the evolution, and betterment of music. Some of the singers may be able to sing, but what do they do? They make a record full of tired cover songs that bring no new life to them, and the original stuff they come up with is horrendous. Kelly Clarkson might be the most successful, but her records are basically the same as all the other pop punk wannabes like Avril Lavigne and Ashlee Simpson. They have a catchy up tempo pop rock song about leaving their boyfriend, and the "moving" ballad about their tough childhood. It may have been a good listen the first time someone did it, but not the ten thousandth time Idol is a personality contest whether it be the single mother that is trying to make it big, or the nice guy that never got a chance. You become attached to the people, and you buy the Cd's based on the fact that you like their personalty and how they came across on a reality show. You are so connected to these people that you think you really like the music, but you like the people first, music second. That isn't what music is about. Music is an art, a form of expression. It should be treated with the same respect as a painting, or a sculpture, and Idol doesn't do that.

The fact that some people who are so talented could never make it on Idol based on "marketability" means that (to me) it is NOT a show about a love for music, but a desire for fame

It should be treated with the same respect as a painting, or a sculpture, and Idol doesn't do that. I have to agree with the comment about becomming attached to some of the people from the show, I know that I do. and a lot of it is their personalities, it's like most reality shows, you get your favorite person from the show and you root for them to win. I know there is better talent out there and some will never make it because they don't get the opportunity and that's sad. It's a really hard business to get into and also to make it big. Star Search was a show that had a lot of people that won and went on to become big stars, i think that's it's up to the individual that has won to go on and do their best with the opportunity that has been given to them. Jay I have heard you play the guitar, you're awesome and have more talent in your little finger than most people will ever have, and I wished that there was a show for instrumental talent, because I know that you could win and it would give you the start that you need to hit it big. That's why I like A I. because if you have some talent, it's help's to get you started. Even though I know that some that have won won't last long, but the ones that have real talent will. And I believe that Jennifer Hudson will, because that girl has some major talent, and she didn't win, but she got her name out there and more than likely wouldn't have done so without A. I.

very well put Jay. but I think kelly clarkson has been really successful in putting out songs that are original and entertaining as well as very deep ones. The others really have just either flopped or made me sick to know that theyre actually on the charts. The show got lucky in finding Kelly, and people should realize that it probably won't happen again. As to its effect on music, as Jay said it's not going to change the way we think of music, but really how many bands/artists have? maybe 2-3 per decade at the most. So accept Kelly for what she is, a good singer who makes good music. As for the contest itself, it's really not about who can sing the best at all. If everyone had to write their own songs, or if it was done over the radio, then it might be about the music. But that doesn't make for good entertainment, so idol will stay the sentimental popularity contest that it has become

I have to agree with Jay, excepet for Kelly Clarkson, yes she is a pop singer that sounds like everyone else, but I don't think it was until her second cd that got people to really notice her. I think it's because she had more creative control over her music on the second one. I did not buy her first cd, and will not. But I love her second one. But does she have staying power, will she make 3 more cds, probably not.
But I also have to agree that people are on the show stay because of personality. Look at Kellie Pickler, I hated her voice, and now she has that song on the radio, and you can tell they don't computerize it, because you can still hear her screechiness in the song. But because she acted dumb, she got as far as she did. I still don't know how Katherine made it to the top 2. I hated her voice, I thought it was never in tune. And I have a good ear for music. Which was why I really wanted Chris to win it, just because it would have been good for a rocker to win it. But I was happy for Taylor.
I also think that it's hard to judge people on real talent when they are singing cover songs. Of course at the end of the season they sing one original, but it is the crappiest song ever. Except for Bo and Chris, no one else ever sang an original song that they wrote. And I commend both of them one doing it. Well than after they sang their original songs, the judges put both guys down, because they did not sing songs that people did not know. Well how the hell are you going to know if someone is talented unless you have them sing their own songs.
Jay, did you ever watch Rockstar: Supernova??? Now this was a show I liked. Not only was it rockers, but people that were in bands. And these were the people that really worked at what they did outside of the show. And will forever be playing in bands. Heck 2 people from the first season with INXS, I know through other people I know. And both of them are still in bands, working really hard. They did sing cover songs, but the people that stood out, were the ones that made the songs their own. And they would bring out their instruments, and play. They wanted to show they really had talent, and show how badly they wanted to play their music. Also towards the end when the show was down to a few contestants, they had to sing a few songs of their own. And that was when you really got to see how talented they were.

One more thing, the age thing bothers me too. I had a discussion about this with someone. I think that age limit should be brought up to 18, and should go up to whatever. I just think 18, because than everyone is an adult, and than if they are under 18. Than you have to deal with parents. Plus you raise the age limit you can get more people in there with more talent. And that are serious about music.
Oh and their phone line system. The show has been on the air for 6 seasons, and has made millions of dollars. You think they could spend a few more dollars and get a better system. Restrict how many times people can call in from a certain number. Half the time you can't get through. So when Ryan says, "135million votes." Yeah but how many of them came from multiple people. Hell even Dancing with the Stars, is not as popular, and they have a better phone system.

All i have to say is that American Idol is a great show. But i watch it for the talent...not the insults Oh that's another thing. Simon Cowell is the biggest ass. He can insult the way people sing. But when he starts to make fun of their appearence that is a different story. Look at Mandisa last year. What an amazing voice. He complimented her, saying how good a voice she had. Than as soon as she walked out the door, he was saying they needed a bigger stage. Come on Simon you are 40+ years old, grow up. I'll admit it I'm far from being skinny, and she has a lot more restraint than me. If he would have said that about me, I would have smacked him, show him that I'm not going to take his crap. Maybe if everyone stops watching it, maybe the show will go off the air.
