I just listened to the new Official Lost Podcast. One of the questions they address is why we HEAR but don't SEE birds on the Island. Instead of just outright answering it, they went off on a tangent about how there are no snakes in Hawaii. How officials search airplane wheel wells etc. to keep them out. How when snakes got onto some other island they upset the ecosystem and either ate or caused the birds to die some other way. How they respect the wildlife, etc.
SO . . . why the big explanation? Why bring up snakes at all? Is it a little clue? A lot of us have been expecting snakes to show up sometime. Are they saying snakes were introduced into the ecosystem of The Island in Lost and that is what happened to the birds? Just a thought.

I think what they meant (I literally just listened to it myself, Annie!!) was that they have to be extremely careful about introducing and working w/animals in Lost because of the ecosystems in Hawaii. Plus, it's certainly cheaper to not work with animals!
That said, the bird they mention isn't the ONLY bird they've shown in Lost; they forgot the one that dies when it slams into the window near Walt. But that's the only two I can think of.

The chicken in The Other 48 Days. But why go off on the snake tangent? They could have just said, "We can't show birds because we have to have special permits, blah blah blah. . ."

no idea. those guys do get easily sidetracked, and you can tell they certainly don't treat their podcast very seriously, which annoys me.
I mean, it's different to have humor in the show; I just get the feeling they treat it as if it was just a lark.

I just started listening to the podcast now. Thanks for the heads up.
I'm incredibly glad that Giacchino is talking about Locke's theme, since it seriously is the best theme from the soundtrack. When it started playing at the end of Deus ex Machina = TV goodness.

Definitely a memorable theme. See what you think about the snake story. I think it is a strange thing to do.
I agree with you, Cliff. How they love to toy with us!

yeah, i listened yesterday night, and i went WTH? when they answered that question by not really answering it. so me too thinks there's more to the snake-bird story.. mayb the monster has something to do with either two? A giant snake that rips out trees! Mayb even robotically enhanced... gaah, dunno, mayb we'll know more 2morrow.

A giant snake that travels through a tunnel system, eats birds, and farts black smoke.

Yes, farts black smoke. Which then flies away...the others have been infected by this fart smoke and that explains the quarantine. We solved the mystery of LOST!!
